Journal Entry - A Summer Day on Viale XX Settembre, Trieste
The Triestine summer is a heavy, beautiful thing, but the moment I stepped onto Viale XX Settembre, a cool, green relief washed over me. This avenue isn't just a street; it's a wide, pedestrian-only boulevard, and its iconic, towering plane trees form a natural, living canopy that filters the relentless sun into dappled shade. It feels like stepping into a peaceful, bustling oasis—a welcome break from the harsh bora or the glare of the sea-front.
The atmosphere here in mid-summer is wonderfully vibrant yet relaxed. It’s a perfect blend of Habsburgian elegance and Italian dolce vita. The architecture is a feast for the eyes, showcasing a charming mix of stern, grand Neo-Renaissance facades and the lighter, decorative flair of Art Nouveau buildings. Beneath the trees, people are strolling at a leisurely, Mediterranean pace—families, friends catching up, and shoppers with paper bags. The sound is a pleasant mix of chatter, the clinking of glasses, and the occasional laughter drifting from the sidewalk cafés. It genuinely feels like the "backbone of the city's daily rhythm."
The main sight here is simply the walk itself. The entire length of the pedestrian street is a beautiful, shaded promenade, inviting you to take your time, look up at the elegant buildings, and people-watch. Anchoring the street is the elegant Rossetti Theatre, and you can spot the highlights of historic cinemas, like the former Ambassadors Cinema, often housed in architectural gems. The Viale connects to other key areas, making it a great starting point, leading you toward Via Carducci for more city exploration.
For food, the Viale is a haven for casual dining and sweet treats. It is famous for its ice cream parlors and bakeries, so stopping for a cooling gelato is a summery necessity—look for the smaller, independent places. For a proper meal, you’ll find pizzerias like Pizzeria Bianco or similar local spots perfect for an easy, classic Italian dinner. I also noted that a branch of The Taste of Home, offering brunch and light, modern fare, is right in this area. While on the topic of food, although maybe not right on the street, you should absolutely seek out a Triestine Buffet for local street food, known as a rebechin, and try a plate of porcina (boiled pork neck) with senape (mustard) and cren (horseradish).
The cafés that spill out onto the pavement make this the ideal place to drink. Since Trieste is the "City of Coffee," a simple espresso (or a local variant like a capo in B) at one of the many cafés under the shade is mandatory. As the late afternoon softens, the sidewalk tables become prime spots for an Aperitivo. Go for a classic Spritz (Aperol or Select) or, for something truly local, ask for a "White Spritz"—wine, soda water, and a slice of lemon—while watching the evening crowds begin to gather.
As for shopping, the Viale is a primary commercial area. You'll find a blend of larger chain stores (like OVS) and, more interestingly, a wonderful array of independent boutiques. These smaller shops are the real treasure, perfect for picking up unique Italian fashion, stylish accessories, or perhaps some light linen clothes ideal for the summer. Beyond clothes, look for local products like unique stationery or traditional pastries and sweets from a pasticceria to take home as a gift.
The Viale XX Settembre is the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon: cool, chic, and genuinely Triestine. It's where the city comes to breathe. A truly wonderful day.
